We loved seeing many alums at Country Fair last weekend, including Samantha Lynch ’21, a senior at St. Joseph Academy. Inspired by her Academy computer teacher, John Storjohann, Sam plans to study cyber security at the University of Alabama. Below, is a note she recently sent to Mr. Storjohann, who shares, “This is why we teach… this is why we educate.”
As I reflect on my last year in high school, I wanted to take a moment to express my heartfelt gratitude for the incredible impact you’ve had on my journey in Computer Science.
Your passion for teaching truly shines through in every lesson, especially in projects like the stock market and our adventures with block coding through Scratch. These experiences weren’t just fun—they inspired me in a way I didn’t know existed yet. You made coding feel like an exciting puzzle to solve, and your enthusiasm and passion for this subject were contagious!
Because of your guidance and encouragement, I am taking the leap to pursue coding in college. I was feeling so unsure about my choice, but reflecting on the success you set me up for during computer class made me believe I am making the right decision. Your ability to make complex concepts accessible and support everyone is incredible. I found myself participating in various computer clubs, exploring new languages, and tackling real-world projects. It’s amazing how the foundations you taught me years ago have now blossomed into a full-blown passion!
Now, as I mentor younger students in coding, I find myself reflecting on the lessons you taught me—patience, creativity, and the joy of problem-solving. Every time I assist a student with a coding challenge, I am reminded of the way you helped me understand the beauty of technology. You inspired me to not only grow my own skills but to also share that knowledge with others, just as you did with us.
Thank you for being such a phenomenal teacher and mentor. Your influence has truly changed the course of my life, and I am forever grateful.
