Successful Lifelong Learners

September 3, 2015

Dear Parents,

I’d like to direct your attention to an article on the Mind/Shift website that reinforces what we believe as Sacred Heart educators: that development of the following 7 skills are essential for young people to become successful lifelong learners.

  1. Formulate good questions.
  2. Communicate in groups and lead by influence.
  3. Be agile and adaptable.
  4. Take initiative and be entrepreneurial.
  5. Effective written and oral communication skills
  6. Know how to access and analyze information.
  7. Be creative and imaginative.

A link to the full article follows:

Becoming Successful Lifelong Learners

The second criterion of Goal II of Sacred Heart Education states that the school provides a rigorous education that incorporates all forms of critical thinking and inspires a lifelong love of learning.

In preparing our children for their future world, where they will be asked to solve problems which have not even been created yet, the memorization of content is much less important than instilling good thinking skills while inspiring them to be lifelong learners!

One example of a curricular program that exemplifies this aspect of Sacred Heart education is our Lower School Math Program. I love this program because it develops conceptual understanding as opposed to merely teaching a particular procedure (which might be memorized and easily forgotten).

I look forward to seeing many of you this evening at the Lower School Parent Meeting.

United in this great mission of education,

Care of Creation

September 1, 2015

Prayer for Integrity of Creation September 1 2015Pope Francis has designated September 1 as a Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. In a letter announcing the Day of Prayer, the Pope said,

The annual World Day of prayer for the Care of Creation offers to individual believers and to the community a precious opportunity to renew our personal participation in this vocation as custodians of creation, raising to God our thanks for the marvellous works that He has entrusted to our care, invoking his help for the protection of creation and his mercy for the sins committed against the world in which we live.  The celebration of the Day on the same date as the Orthodox Church will be a valuable opportunity to bear witness to our growing communion with our orthodox brothers.”

Alumni Gifts Provide Enhancements to Shrine

August 28, 2015

While so much was happening outdoors this summer to transform our campus and the entrance approaches, parking spaces and play areas, some wonderful things were happening close by in the Shrine of St. Philippine Duchesne. As part of the five-year plan undertaken by the Alumni Association in anticipation of the Bicentennial in 2018, one of the needs identified by the administration (and certainly by the Shrine Director) was a way to accommodate pilgrims who arrive at a time when no volunteer docent is on duty.

Beginnings

August 27, 2015

Dear Parents,

The wonderful thing about beginnings is that they inherently offer promise and possibility. Fresh notebooks, clean planners and sharpened pencils are symbols of that possibility for which open hearts and eager minds are poised!

As we celebrate this year’s start, I plan to take time in the next few Thursday Mails to introduce you to something, someone, or someplace in our school that invites us to enter into that promise of growth.

This week, I invite you to read about our school library, Cribbin Hall.

United in the sacred task of inviting and inspiring our students to growth,

Maureen Glavin, rscj

We look forward to Marita describing her five-years-in-the-making book. RSVP to Alumni Director Jane Cannon.

Alumni Info

August 21, 2015

When students graduate from the Academy of the Sacred Heart, they matriculate to some of the area’s best high schools. These schools often tell us that Academy grads “stand out,” and are recognized for their character and generosity. Beyond high school and college, alumni go on to successful careers in a wide range of professions. More importantly, they strive to make the world a better place by the lives they lead.

A great number of Academy alums remain loyal and supportive of their Alma Mater and return when they can to the place where it all began for them. For information regarding alumni, please call 636-946-6127.

Open House

August 17, 2015

We look forward to seeing all of our families this evening at Open House! Drop by to meet your child’s teacher and reconnect with Academy friends. We ask that you enter through the White Center, where representatives from the following will be on hand: the Cafeteria, School Nurse, Early Arrival/Late Dismissal, Extracurricular Clubs and Activities, Athletics, Development Office, Mothers’ Club, Innisbrook Wraps, and Country Fair.

Unfortunately, the Slice of the Hill food truck that was slated to be here has a broken generator, and will be unable to serve food as planned. However, the Kona-Ice truck will be here, serving sno-cones. (Look for them outside White Center near the loading dock.)
