June 23, 2017

Today, on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, St. Philippine Duchesne’s star and bronze plaque on the St. Louis Walk of Fame were unveiled to the cheers of approximately 200 RSCJ, Sacred Heart alumni, families and friends. Mr. Joe Edwards, founder of the Walk of Fame, read the inscription on the plaque, followed by remarks by Sister Sheila Hammond, Provincial of the US and Canada Society of the Sacred Heart, and Sister Maureen Glavin, our Head of School. [remarks]  Bill Herbert’s Ragtime trio provided joyous tunes preceding the event. The star and plaque are located at 6241 Delmar on the Loop (in front of United Provisions Grocery). Thanks to all who welcomed our remarkable saint’s story to the public square!

Virginia Orf

June 22, 2017

Our sympathy and prayers for the family of longtime Academy employee Virginia Orf, who died recently. Virginia was a school staff member for more than half a century, and a boarding employee during her early years.

Of her time at Sacred Heart, Virginia once wrote:  “Yes, the years are filled with so many fond memories and the faces and names of so many friends: Religious, children, fellow workers and teachers come to mind when I reminisce. The good times and bad, the joyous and the sad that we have shared. The fun we had together.”

May she rest in peace.

Sister Clare Pratt wrote: “God called Carol home on this Feast of Corpus Christi. Let us thank God for her wonderful faithful life, for her devoted family and friends and for the gentle way our loving God brought her home.”

ASH Bicentennial Website

June 8, 2017

In September 2018 we’ll reach an important milestone—200 years of Sacred Heart education at the Academy of the Sacred Heart! But we aren’t waiting until the fall of 2018 to recognize this noteworthy anniversary. Both the Academy and the Society of the Sacred Heart have planned more than a year’s worth of events to celebrate 200 years since St. Philippine Duchesne carried the mission of Sacred Heart education to America.

To share events that have already occurred and to keep everyone up-to-speed regarding celebratory plans on the horizon, today we launched an Academy Bicentennial website. Whatever you may be wondering about Sacred Heart’s Bicentennial, look for it here.

Service Bound

May 26, 2017

Four of our Seventh Class students will be participating next month in a summer service project offered by the Network of Sacred Heart Schools. Astrid, Sia, Sahiti and Abby will be going to Sacred Heart Schools in Atherton, Cal., to learn “How Organic School Farms and Gardens Can Help Feed the Planet.” We applaud them for living Goal III—“Schools of the Sacred Heart commit themselves to educate to a social awareness which impels to action”—and look forward to learning about their experience next fall.

Pre-Primary Closing

May 26, 2017

Our Pre-Primary students paid tribute to the Blessed Mother with songs and flowers in the Rose Garden before gathering in the Shrine for their Closing ceremony. The class gifted Mrs. Renken and Sister Glavin with candles, and each student was recognized for special gifts and characteristics. Sister Glavin expressed appreciation for the Pre-Primary students’ growth in learning and for what they have brought to the community this year. Happy summer, boys and girls!
