From the Heart

In September, members of the Academy community gathered for the St. Philippine Gratitude Reception. A highlight of the evening was Daniel Y. ’26, who reflected on his ten years at the Academy with gratitude and love.

I’m really honored to be here tonight and say a few words about what makes me who I am today. I know I’m only 13, almost 14, but even already, I’ve learned that it takes a lot of people and a lot of love to help someone grow into the person they’re meant to be.

First, I want to talk about my faith. My faith is the foundation of everything I do. It gives me strength when I feel weak, and it reminds me that I’m never alone even when life feels a little overwhelming. I believe that God has a purpose for all of us and being at this school has helped me understand that better. From morning prayers to learning about values like kindness, forgiveness, and service, my faith has become more than just something I believe in, it’s become part of who I am.

I also want to thank my teachers. You’re probably used to hearing this, but seriously teachers do not get enough credit. They do not just teach us math, science, and how to write essays, they teach us how to think, how to work hard, and how to keep going when things get tough. Some days I walk into class feeling tired or unsure, but by the time I leave I feel encouraged, smarter, and more confident. I want to thank them for pushing me and for believing in me, even when I did not believe in myself.

Then there’s our community, my classmates, my friends, my family, and everyone who supports the school. Being a part of a community means having someone to laugh with, someone to sit with at lunch, someone to remind you that you matter. Whether it’s cheering at sports games, helping out with fundraisers or just being there when someone needs a friend, this community has shaped me in ways I can never fully explain.

Tonight, I also want to say a big thank you to all the people who donated to our school. I may not know all of your names, but I do know your generosity makes a difference. Because of you we have better books, better technology, awesome events and opportunities that we might not have had otherwise. You might think you’re just writing a check or giving a little of your time, but to us students, you have invested into our futures and that means more than I can say.

So, thank you truly for helping make our school a place where faith, learning, and love come together. Because of all of you my faith, my teachers, and my community are forming someone who believes in doing the right thing, helping others, and being the best version of myself.

I still have a lot to learn, but I’m proud of the person I’m becoming and I’m grateful I do not have to do it alone.
