Today Mrs. Renken and I had the opportunity to conduct an ‘exit’ interview with the members of the Eighth Class. These students, soon to be our newest alumni, offered rich reflections on their Academy experiences. They shared observations that included what they most valued about their time here as well as valuable insight into areas and opportunities for our growth and enrichment.
Of all the many comments shared, two struck me as particularly insightful. One came from Clair Stewart. She offered that for her, the Goals and Criteria were something she really valued. She went on to explain that it was “through the strong community we have here that we all are helped to pursue the others [Goals]. George Gaylord offered the second as he commented about the bonds the young men in the Eighth Class share, stating that these bonds were not just those of “school friends rather it was like a brotherhood.”
We are blessed to have this community of students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, parents of alumni, board members and friends. Clair was correct—through community we grow in our capacity to live out a contemporary understanding of the mission and vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, embraced by our own St. Rose Philippine Duchesne. George’s appreciation of a bond that goes beyond typical school friends is something that I hope we all have encountered, whether through fathers working at the Field Day Barbecue, mothers coming together for Breakfast with Santa or through the longevity of friendships shared by parents of alumni.
Next week, we at the Academy will celebrate this community at our Parent Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast. It is our chance to reflect back a small showering of gratitude and love for all that you have shared across this school year. Like the Middle School Internal Showcases held in December and January, this is a new event. I hope you allow us an opportunity to formally say thank you as this year draws to a close. Please RSVP to Rita Nelson and come celebrate with us!
Hope to see you there!
