The Academy had two teams of students participate in the First Lego League Qualifier Tournament on Dec. 8. The First Lego League Tournament challenges teams to focus on three areas: Robot Games, Innovation Project and Core Values.
The Robot Games allow members to design, build and program an autonomous robot using Lego Mindstorm EV3 bricks and pieces to perform tasks on the challenge mat. The Innovation Project allowed teams to identify a problem with a building or public space in their community, design a solution, share the solution with others and refine it. The Core Values emphasize team-building skills, professionalism and fun while working with other Academy students and coaches.
The Academy Saints team consisted of Evan Boschert, Patrick Gattas, Emily Goodenough, Bethany Leight, Emily Leight, and Nidhi Tangirala. Their Innovation Project focused on cost-effective and eco-friendly ways to restore the greenhouse. The Academy Saints received First Place for their Innovation Project, Third Place for Robot Games, and received exemplary marks for core values.
The ASH Robotics team consisted of Ben Bierbrauer, Jack Biebrauer, Brendan Donovan, Rishi Mumgandi, Ben Schneider, and Yash Shelar. Their Innovation Project focused on designing a retractable handrail in historic buildings. The ASH Robotics received First Place for the Innovation Project, Fifth Place for Robot Games, and received high marks for their decision making and problem solving skills for Core Values.
In addition, both teams received the Project Award, which recognizes a team that excels across the Research, Innovative Solution, and Presentation categories. Teams given this award utilize diverse resources for their project to help them gain a comprehensive understanding of the problem they identify to develop a creative, well-researched solution and effectively communicate their findings to judges and the community.
We congratulate both our Robotics teams on their success and look forward to seeing what innovate ideas they will come up with next! Très Bien!
