Network Summer Service Projects coordinated by the Network of Sacred Heart Schools offer Sacred Heart students nationwide opportunities for growth. This summer, 18 Academy students entering 8th and 9th grades will join dozens of other students in Network Summer Service Projects. Planning began in January with lengthy applications, personal narratives, and recommendations submitted for the ASH students who applied.
- Two students will be “joining the circus” as they travel to Clown Academy at Princeton Academy in Princeton, N.J. There they’ll learn to dress like a clown and put on their painted clown faces while perfecting juggling, enjoying slapstick humor, riding unicycles or performing acrobatic feats. All these skills will be performed “under the big top” for two community centers in Trenton. An outing to NYC is also planned for some clowning around in Times Square!
- Seven students will be working on Project Harvest at Sprout Creek Farm in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Their days will be filled with chores such as milking cows and goats, gardening and harvesting crops, food preservation, cooking, feeding the animals and mucking stalls and coops. A visit to the soup kitchen with donations from the farm is a memorable day for the “farmers.”
- One student will be heading east for Hearts Fighting Hunger, a project at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in Greenwich, Ct.
- Agape in Seattle, Wash. will be the destination of three other Academy students. They will be staying at Forest Ridge, another Sacred Heart school in Bellingham, Wash. Focusing on the needs of migrant workers, these students will conduct a food drive, become a migrant worker for a day, serve the people at a local migrant camp, as well as set up and run a food bank.
- Finally, five ASH students will take part in Alligators to Zydeco, a project in New Orleans that will facilitate meaningful participation in the restoration of the coastal wetland ecology of South Louisiana.
Congratulations to these students who have made the choice to step out of their comfort zones to connect with many hearts across the USA. We hope that each of them will be a manifestation of God’s Love in the world!
