Countdown to Congé (2011–2016)

LOOKING FORWARD TO LOOKING BACK

Proposed plan for the Shrine interior

Proposed plan for the Shrine interior

As the 2018 celebration of the Bicentennial of the founding of the Academy looms ever nearer, many of the projects on the school’s wish list pertain to the oldest part of the school and to the person who made all of this dream come true 200 years ago.

There are needs in the Shrine of St. Philippine Duchesne—inside and out. Constructed in 1952, its beautiful wooden doors, which have welcomed visitors for fifty years, have become warped and  mildewed. The Shrine exterior needs to be power-washed and sealed. The red cushions, which many assume are a modest attempt to assuage the discomfort of the pews, were actually devised as an aid to the acoustics. However, they are due to be replaced.

We have met with a museum consultant who has presented us with plans for educational exhibits on the west walls of the Shrine, designs for enhancing the interiors of the parlors, “back porch” and adjoining rooms of the 1835 and 1840 buildings, and making the pilgrim experience here more informative and inspiring. All of this will be done while maintaining the historic integrity and aura of holy simplicity of the house. These improvements will not only enhance the look of our whole property but will be helpful for the times when visitors come and we have no docent to conduct a tour.

We are committed to carrying out this plan as funds become available and, with hopeful expectation, look to loyal and generous alumni support to help make this newest dream a reality.
