International Language Studies

In Kaleidoscope (Global Studies) classes, our Lower School students are introduced to the basic vocabulary of a country’s language. By fourth grade, students are able to pronounce, read and write select words and phrases in several different languages.

In fifth grade, a class period is devoted to the study of international languages. Students learn, alternately, French and Spanish. In addition to basic vocabulary skills, they acquire the ability to articulate fundamental phrases in question and answer form. At the end of the school year, the children choose to pursue either French or Spanish in grades 6-8.

DSC_0975Reading elementary passages, mastering basic grammar concepts and tenses, writing simple sentences and paragraphs, and comprehending the spoken word in Sixth Class lead to the expansion and reinforcement of grammar concepts through reading, writing, listening and speaking in Seventh Class. In their final year at the Academy, students are introduced to concepts at a second year high school level, extending the level of difficulty in reading passages, refining paragraph writing skills, and expanding conversation to a more complex and spontaneous level.

When they enter high school, most Academy graduates test into second year French or Spanish. Some have even begun their studies at the third year level.   Très bien!   Muy bueno!
